It never rains...
Our old mate Lofty Jones was reading the paper and said to Mrs Lofty, “Gee all this water problem is a bit of a worry at the moment. Even looks like the Murray Darling river could dry up.”
“Well, it’s no piddling issue’, Mrs Lofty replied, “Which reminds me, I’m more worried about your water flow at the moment. I don’t think you’re drinking enough fluids and you’ve been drinking a lot more beers lately”.
“Mmmh, wonder if the government might pour some of those resources into me then”, replied Lofty.
The big dry - a colour test
Lofty started to think about this however and checked up the next time he saw his doctor. He was surprised to find that the yellow colour he had been noticing in his urine in the morning was an indication of dehydration. His GP also told him that it will appear darker and more yellow with increasing levels of dehydration.
He also discovered that alcohol is a very poor re-hydrator and although when you drink you may be pouring a lot of fluid into you, it doesn’t provide much hydration. This made him realise that drinking all that beer wasn’t really doing much good—as you get older your body fluid decreases and alcohol has a greater effect than it used to when you were under about 40.
Maintaining an adequate fluid balance is important for your health.
Keep the rivers running – hydration is everyone’s business
These are all good reasons to drink water regularly and have a rethink about your drinking patterns. So Lofty is pretty flush these days after following the doctor’s advice. He’s feeling better all round and seems to have a lot more energy now that he’s well watered.
