Changing Your Drinking - DIY
Dave looks forward to catching up with his mates down at the RSL on weekends. He
also drinks most days of the week - he probably can't remember the last day
when he didn't have a drink. Although his wife has been at him to do something
about his drinking for years, Dave wasn't really interested - until now.
A Healthy Change
A Vietnam veteran in his late fifties, Dave started to have a few health
problems - mostly blood pressure and weight. But he got a shock when his doctor
warned him that he could even develop diabetes. Health was the heads up that
made Dave think seriously about his drinking.
It's Your Change
Dave is like the majority who decide to change their drinking - they usually do
it on their own. It's not certain why this is the case but listening to
veterans, it could have something to do with the value placed on self-reliance.
Dave is taking one day at a time, trying to drink less with the support of his
family and mates, and drawing on information and advice from his doctor.

Dave's Progress
So how is Dave going? He lost 5kgs, is sleeping better and has started walking
regularly. He doesn't wake up early in the morning any more and reckons he and
his wife aren't arguing as much as they used to. Best of all, he's not hung
over all the time.
