And The Boys Light Up
Rubbish
'Lofty' Jones* recalls when light beer first came out.
"I've got a mate who's always been a pretty solid drinker
and he reckoned it was rubbish. At the time, I thought he was right",
Lofty said.
"If anyone asked for a light beer he always gave them a hard
time."
Old dogs can learn new tricks
At a reunion last month, Lofty ran into his mate and was amused
to find that he's now drinking light himself. He told Lofty it was
the best thing he ever did and he should have done it sooner.
Meanwhile I'm thinking, "is this the same bloke?" Lofty
joked.
Of course the answer to that is no, it is not the same bloke. He's
a lot older and he can't handle alcohol like he used to. He is feeling
the pace just like the rest of us.
Light appeals
One in every four beers opened in Australia these days is a light.
People of all ages are now enjoying the flavour of some good light
beers without criticism.
"Most of the blokes that I regularly drink with are now drinking
light," Lofty said.
If you want to slow up a bit, the best way to do it and still enjoy
a beer is to drink light. You can almost cut your alcohol intake
in half and there are some excellent light beers around.
2.2 to Premium
The breweries have put a lot of time and money into improving light
beer from those early 2.2s. They have increased the alcohol content
slightly to around 2.7, which gets rid of the chemical that caused
the unpleasant taste. Light beers are premium beers in their own
right, instead of simply low-alcohol versions of others.
So if you want to cut back a bit, enjoy a night out and still bounce
back the next day, then join the rest of the boys and switch to
light.
