The Christmas FEAST-ival

Can you believe Christmas is nearly here again? For many of us that means catching up, eating, drinking, and then New Year’s, eating, drinking…. how exhausting!!!

Dinner and drinks

While this time of the year can be heaps of fun, there is also the temptation to over-indulge. Choosing a healthy diet, regular exercise and low-risk drinking is a sensible choice for a healthy mix, at Christmas and all year round.

We all know we should eat better, exercise more and drink less, but shouldn’t we be able to let our hair down at least once a year? The key is to have a good time but pace yourself and be safe. Remember to:

  • Have something to eat before you go out;
  • Start the night with a juice or soft drink or two to quench your thirst;
  • Drink at your own pace;
  • Drink water between drinks; and
  • Get a taxi, don’t drink and drive.

Getting the mix of diet, exercise and alcohol right may help you stay fitter and healthier over the next few months. Start the year on a healthy note!

The Morning After

If you do happen to over-indulge you might end up with a hangover. You can’t get rid of it, but can treat it by:

  • Drinking lots of fluids, especially water
  • Drinking tea or coffee, but follow coffee with water
  • Eating a good meal, avoiding fatty foods
  • Taking two paracetamol tablets for the headache
  • Taking some B vitamins or a Berocca

Better still, why not avoid a hangover in the first place by trying some of the tips on The Right Mix website www.therightmix.gov.au? It’s your choice…

Whatever you do though, have a happy, safe and healthy Christmas and New Year- with the best wishes of the Alcohol Management team.
