Don’t stop

"It's an absolutely fabulous program. The depth of the content is brilliant. My medico uses it and says 'it's excellent'. "
(Veteran)

"It has been very useful to open the dialogue about health and alcohol. It gets you thinking about change"
(VVCS Counsellor)

The results of The Right Mix: Your Health and Alcohol evaluation are in and they send a clear message: DON’T STOP.

DVA contracted Elliot and Shanahan Research to answer the question: “is The Right Mix really making a difference?” The answer is a definite YES. Veterans, partners, war widows and health professionals all agree that The Right Mix has made a positive impact. As for the promotional material, for those who came into contact with it, some of the findings are worth a mention:

  • 59 per cent of veterans and 68 per cent of partners are aware of The Right Mix, and a good proportion of these had used the resources;
  • 67 per cent of those aware of the resource said that they had an intention to drink less in the next 12 months; and
  • The Right Mix was seen as the first step in ongoing education on health and alcohol.

Other findings gave DVA a lead on where more attention is needed:

  • some GPs may be unaware of The Right Mix material, as well as the services available for veterans;
  • the effects of alcohol on PTSD, anxiety, depression and sleep are not as clearly understood by veterans as they should be; and.
  • there were suggestions the project should be extended to cover other substance use.

The Right Mix team, along with dedicated folk in the ex-service community, has been working extremely hard to get the message out about alcohol and health. While the results of the evaluation are a positive sign, there is still more to be done. Tell your mates about The Right Mix, talk about your own experiences, get online and order the material.

Next Edition

The next addition will talk about "alcohol and your mental health".
