Talking about The Right Mix
Evan, a Men's Health Peer Educator from Perth, was a little nervous when he
first started talking about The Right Mix to other veterans. He didn't want to
come across as a wowser. Despite this apprehension, he told The Right Mix team
that everyone he spoke to was interested. Some only wanted to take a brochure,
while others were keen for more information.
Getting the Message Out
Joy is a war widow from regional NSW who attended a Right Mix workshop organised
by her local DVA Community Adviser. She decided to personally deliver a Right
Mix kit to every pharmacist in the area who provides services to veterans.
An AUDIT for Health
Concerned about the health of his fellow veterans, a RSL Welfare and Pension
Officer has started to offer the AUDIT to each of his clients. The AUDIT
assesses your drinking and only takes a few minutes to complete. Albert is
including it with other health information he hands out. He encourages his
clients to complete it in their own time at home. Albert gives them a copy of
The Right Mix brochure in case they need more information. He also suggests
that they talk to their GP about their AUDIT score.
Stories of Change
Slowly but surely, veteran groups around the country are including The Right Mix
into their activities. Some groups have mailed out the brochure with their
newsletter mailout. Others are making sure that coasters are available at
Cooking for 1 or 2 meals. In NSW, another veteran network has decided to make
their post-meeting drink tickets non-transferrable, so that every participant
really does end up with only two drink tickets each.
Ways to Help Yourself
Evan, Joy and Albert report that everyone they talk to is very interested in
health and alcohol, but it's up to individuals to decide if they need or want
to change their drinking.
If you would like to do something about your drinking, here are some things you
can do:
Latest News
The Right Mix standard drinks glass is now available to help inform veterans
about standard drinks. Before you can do anything about changing your drinking,
it helps to know just how much you are drinking now. The schooner sized plastic
glass has the standard drink measurements on the side and can be used for
simple demonstrations in workshops or group programs.
Glasses can be ordered through:
alcoholproject@dva.gov.au
or by writing to:

Change the Mix by Correspondence
A Self Help Correspondence Program, Changing the Mix,
is now available for veterans, peacekeepers or defence force personnel who
would like to change their drinking. It is a new way to help you cut down or
cut out your drinking but it uses proven methods.
This program can help you to change your drinking yourself. Importantly, you
will learn ways to help you maintain that change.
Over 10 weeks you will receive regular packages of information and material for
you to work through. A drinking diary will help you to keep track of how you
are going. If you live in a remote area and need help with your drinking, this
program could be ideal for you. Perhaps you have tried to do something about
your drinking before?
The Self Help Correspondence Program will help you build a tool kit of ways to
change the mix yourself. Changing your drinking can make you feel healthier and
get more out of your life and relationships.
When you join the program, your details will remain strictly confidential.
